Dutch techie and SA writer collaborate to create book for young Mzansi girls

An international book has been given some Mzansi flavour to inspire SA's young girls to dream big and occupy the tech space.

The book is an international concept that has been specifically localised for the South African context by writer and editor Buhle Ngaba.

"The New Girl Code" aims to encourage young girls to pursue entrepreneurship and careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) field.

It's about the wonders of working in tech, aimed at girls and young women aged 9-15.

The book follows 15-year-old Tumi Letsatsi in Rondebosch, Cape Town, a teen trying to figure out fashion, school friendships, romance, social media and coding.

Ngaba says her SA version of the book came to life after she created mindmaps about the world of the character.

This story had to feel like it was in South Africa.

The project is an initiative of Inspiring Fifty and based on an idea by Janneke Niessen.

Niessen, a Dutch technology entrepreneur, says she was motivated to create the concept for the story in order to advocate for an inclusive tech space.

Technology is the future and, currently, we only allow a very small group of people to shape that future. That's not good. We should all be involved.
