[LISTEN] How adaptive surfing has helped a paralyzed man feel empowered

David Nhlapo was left paralyzed in 2016 when he jumped in front of his pregnant fiance to save her from a mugger who fired a gun at her.

But refusing to be held back by his disability Nhlapo learned how to surf and has since started the I Am Victorious Foundation to inspire others living with disabilities.

He is currently in Cape Town at the Wavescape Surf and Ocean Festival where he will share about his deep love for the sea.

He took some time out to share his story with Azania.

The moment Ofentse [his child] was born, it brought a whole perspective to me. I felt like something good came out of that night and that is the moment I chose to champion.

David Nhlapo

I believe I overcame all the battles I had emotionally, I could have easily spiralled into depression, I could have chosen to live with anger....but a mind shift is something that has taken place. I believe that the most important object I have as human being is my mind and that is the message I am trying to pass with my foundation.

David Nhlapo

I would encourage people to use their social media positively. I was going around wondering what can I do as a disabled person and that is when I cam across adaptive surfing. I went to Cape Town, started surfing and that blew my mind. I felt empowered.
