Global Citizen Fest: We need to do better says Joburg's Michael Sun

Music fans who attended the Global Citizen Festival showpiece at the FNB Stadium on Sunday have been detailing their horrific experiences at the hands of criminals after leaving the venue.

Kieno Kammies chats to Johannesburg mayoral committee member for Public Safety, Michael Sun about the events that transpired.

Sun says the City is really concerned and deeply shocked at the incidents that took place at the event.

It was particularly shocking that some victims were children waiting for uber or other modes of transport, he adds.

We want to request those that have been affected, from the city's perspective we want to offer any kind of assistance that we can, either in helping the victims coming forward or helping the victims to report these cases to Saps.

When probed about the City's role in the planning of the event Sun says:

I need to explain firstly how the event was organised. Obviously there are different structures at play. Within the event itself, you have the venue operations centre (VOC) where the Johannesburg Metro Police Department together with the Emergency Management Services are part of this team.

We, in terms of JMPD, are responsible for traffic management. But the overall planning and command was under the National Joint Operational Intelligence Structure.

He adds that they have learnt the lessons from the events that took place on Sunday and they need to do better for the upcoming events.
