Your employer has the right to fire you in connection with a drunk driving charge under certain circumstances.

Employment expert Gavin Stansfield says when misconduct is committed outside of the workplace employers are required to prove how the misconduct impacts on the working relationship.

South Africa loses 14 000 lives on its roads each year. Many of these deaths are linked to alcohol.

Stansfield says employers are allowed to act against an employee in cases where they are arrested and if they are convicted.

He adds that employers are entitled to make contractual provisions that clearly explain where they stand on drunken driving and other forms of criminal misconduct.
