Study: Women with disabilities twice as likely to become victims of sexual abuse

Research by the Institute for Development in Southern Africa has revealed that South African women with disabilities are twice as likely to become victims of sexual abuse, rape and intimate partner violence.

Research also shows that they are more psychologically vulnerable than able-bodied women.

Programmes manager of Hlanganisa Institute for Development in Southern Africa, Chiedza Chagutah joined Joanne Joseph on the Afternoon Drive to unpack this.

One of the key findings was that having a disability on its own, predisposes women to the risk of experiencing gender based violence. There is also high incidents of poverty.
