[LISTEN] Must you renovate your childhood home to prove that you've made it big?

Do you have to renovate the house where you grew up or relocate your family to the suburbs as a measure of your upward mobility?

Eusebius McKaiser asked this after The Daily Show host Trevor Noah filmed a visit to his 91-year-old grandmother at her humble home in Soweto, where he spent some of his childhood.

Noah has been receiving some flak from social media users who have been wondering why he hasn't refurbished his Gogo's old house.

Eusebius shared his own opinion and invited listeners to share their views on the matter.

Surely some of the criticism is just misplaced. Who are you to know intimately what it is that Trevor Noah's grandmother wants? Maybe she doesn't care for all the material trappings of his salary.

We need to remember that our elders do not have the same values and measurement that we do... My dad tried for a long time to buy my mother a Mercedes Benz. She did not want it.

Trevor has said in his stand up work that he tried to move his granny and his mum and they flat out refused.... I love those fridge magnets, they remind me of my childhood.

Thando

I have friends who've done very well for themselves, worth hundreds of millions of rands and their parents are simple people... The children have begged them to move somewhere fancy and they just come from a frugal background. It makes them uncomfortable to be around excess.

Julian, caller

I come from a very small town in the Free State where my grandmother is. She stays in a four-room house. Every time her grandkids come together to build her a fancy house, she refuses.

Gladstone, caller

I would suggest that Trevor could at least build an indoor toilet for his grandmother if she doesn't want to move.
