Gas turbines approved by Treasury to reduce load shedding

Eskom says it has received Treasury's approval for the emergency procurement of diesel to power its open cycle gas turbines as load shedding threatens to plunge the economy into further crisis.

Speaking to Xolani Gwala, Eskom's Khulu Phasiwe says system outages necessitated the introduction of had to stage 2 load shedding on Thursday.

Phasiwe adds in order to reduce the amount of load shedding, it has had to introduce gas turbines.

The Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGT) are used during emergencies to avoid load shedding or if you have load shedding at least to mitigate against having a deeper level of load shedding.

He says the energy regulator has provided an allocation of 1% of the energy it has produced and should be coming from those generators. It has already exceeded the budget allowed by the regulator. Since the beginning of the financial year, it has spent over R800 million.
