'Minister shouldn't have interfered with SABC operational retrenchment issues'

Sanef's Dr Kate Skinner says the problems at the SABC started when the Communications minister had a stand-off with the board.

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday accepted and confirmed the resignation of four South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board members.

They are Khanyisile Koyama, Krish Naidoo, John Matterson and Mathatha Tsedu.

The resignations come at the back of incriminating revelations that the board being investigated by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) over a dispute involving a multi-million rand contract for security services.

Executive Director at Sanef, Dr Kate Skinner, says there have been major problems around the security contract, however, the four, throughout their tenure, played a powerful role at the SABC.

Skinner believes the board was independent and the new minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams's involvement created problems.

The issue is that she shouldn't have gotten involved in the operational issues around retrenchments and the fact that she had a stand-off with the board, created a huge problem leading to board members resigning.

Dr Kate Skinner, Executive Director Sanef

Skinner believes the SIU report needs investigation but raises concerns about the potential collapse of the board altogether.

This would result in an interim board having to be appointed.

Skinner questions whether an interim board would not be independent, especially in an election year.
