We would not in any way seek to influence the workings of the board and the decisions they make because we believe that the public broadcaster must be allowed to discharge their mandate without fear or favour.

However, Mabe says the ANC has always had a firm stand against retrenchments, especially given the current economic climate.

We said that there should be other better ways to deal with the situation than taking the route of retrenching employees.

Mabe says the ANC cannot influence the decisions of the board.

We can't influence the board of the SABC on how they can undertake their ways and that is why we found reports that suggested that we would've influenced the resignations of the board quite worrisome.
