SA placed 19 out of 194 countries in terms of alcohol abuse - Dr. Fundile Nyathi

In the health feature, CEO of Proactive Health Solutions Dr. Fundile Nyathi chats about alcohol abuse during the festive season.

Dr. Nyathi says that around this time of year, people tend to consume large amounts of alcohol.

He adds that alcohol is a drug that impacts the body negatively.

Dr. Nyathi says that the World Health Organisation regularly conducts studies surrounding alcohol usage in countries.

As a country, South Africa rates in the top 20 out of a 194 countries in terms of alcohol abuse.

Dr. Nyathi says that in Africa, South Africa was third after Namibia and Gabon in terms of alcohol abuse by the population.

Globally, in terms of people who drink and drive, we (South Africans) are number one.

Dr. Nyathi says that South Africa has a major drinking problem.

He adds that the consumption per capita is where the problem lies.

Dr. Nyathi says that more than 50% of South Africans don't drink.

The minority of drinkers are drinking for the rest of the population he adds.
