'Evidence is solid. Poor people’s money was used illegally. Shivambu benefitted'

It [the evidence] is solid. The problem is I can never work anywhere in South Africa or the world again if I make things up… it is totally solid…. People and documents [when asked where the info comes from]… We never use only a single source… We use several sources to look at one fact from various sides… all different sources to verify one fact only.

Pauli van Wyk, Scorpio at Daily Maverick

Journalists are not allowed to help the police. It’s highly unethical… If the Hawks and the NPA are not doing their work, we’ll investigate them…

Pauli van Wyk, Scorpio at Daily Maverick

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president Floyd Shivambu used his influence with VBS Mutual Bank's management to secure a home loan for his parents’ house, alleges Pauli Van Wyk, an investigative journalist with Scorpio at Daily Maverick.

(Click here to read Van Wyk’s article in The Daily Maverick.)

Along with R16 million in illicit payments, reports The Daily Maverick, VBS Mutual Bank also approved a R1.46 million home loan registered to the slush fund Shivambu's brother Brian operated.

Scorpio reports that leaked emails show Shivambu had private discussions with VBS Mutual Bank managers to influence them to approve a home loan to buy a house for his parents in Witpoortjie on the West Rand.

Despite not qualifying, VBS Mutual Bank granted the loan.

Scorpio says there's no evidence that Shivambu’s parents were aware of how this home loan was approved.

When asked for a response, Shivambu dismissed the claims as rubbish and then hung up.

Ray White (in for The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield) interviewed Pauli van Wyk, an investigative journalist with Scorpio at Daily Maverick.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and scroll down for more quotes from it).

It’s illegal and illicit money derived from the very poor… it was used to prop up Mr Floyd Shivambu’s lifestyle…

Pauli van Wyk, Scorpio at Daily Maverick

We’re not questioning Mr Shivambu that he was robbed… but we’re struggling to find evidence that he reported it to the police… We cannot find a case number… Either he didn’t report it, or the police lost the case…

Pauli van Wyk, Scorpio at Daily Maverick

I realise that Mr Floyd Shivambu… is always one or two steps removed… so we’re looking at why he’s using proxies, and if they’re legit… A whole network of people is being linked to this VBS robbery, including the EFF…

Pauli van Wyk, Scorpio at Daily Maverick

Mr Ndlozi has always denied wrongdoing… He was very careful in how he denied it… to show that it might have happened, but if it did… they did not know about it.
