Kidnapping for ransom on the rise in Gauteng

There has been a spate of kidnapping for ransom in Gauteng's East Rand since the beginning of the festive season, say police. For three successive days in December, five children have been kidnapped with their families being extorted for ransom money.

Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane says it is apparent that these kidnappings are not targeted, with the kidnappers leaving ransom notes with other children to give to parents after abducting their victims.

I can't say they are specifically targeting a certain type of child or family, they are just randomly doing it. All the children that have been kidnapped were treated properly and not harmed and when they are released they are left in a safe place.

Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, Gauteng MEC for Community Safety

Malobane believes that these kidnappers are just after the ransom money, however, she fears for the safety of children whose parents cannot afford to pay the ransom.

We are confident that we will arrest them very soon.
