Public Protector finds conflict of interest in Mbalula's paid for trip to Dubai

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has found that sporting goods supplier Sedgars paid for Fikile Mbalula's R680,000 holiday to Dubai in December 2016 when he was sports minister.

Mkhwebane released details on this and several other investigations during a briefing on Wednesday.

Eyewitness News (EWN) reporter Barry Bateman revealed a year ago that Sedgars funded the family holiday but Mbalula claimed he'd received a loan from the company.

Bateman, who says Mbalula went to incredible lengths to discredit him and EWN, shares more on the story.

R300 000 was paid for by Sedgars Sport for this trip, transferred via a company called Reimon Uniforms. The director of Reimon Uniforms is a cousin of Yusuf Dockrat who is the director of Sedgars Sport, Sedgars Sports being a supplier to the SASCOC (South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee), so the public protector finding that there was a clear conflict of interest there.

The remainder of the funds were paid for in cash. The exact whereabouts of the cash we don't know, that is why the Public Protector has referred this matter for further investigation into the possibility of potential fraud or money laundering on the part of the minister in how those funds were paid.

Fikile Mbalula had claimed to the Public Protector that there was some loan agreement, she has rejected that claim...finding that he had violated the constitution as well as the executive ethics code.
