Arms of state are failing Khoi and San community, says group

The Khoi and San Council in Gauteng says it supports the picketing taking place outside the Union Buildings, led by Chief Khoisan SA.

The picketers have been camping outside the Union Buildings, demanding recognition as the first indigenous nation in South Africa.

While the Khoi and San Council maintains that it is a separate body to Khoisan SA, it expresses similar grievances about being overlooked by government.

The Council's Elwin White claims that the state has failed to accommodate the Khoi and San community for many years.

He says both the courts and the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) are not impartial and cannot defend the community's concerns.

We know that the challenges of the Khoi and San will never be addressed by the Commission because it's appointed by the state, which pays its salary.

The Khoi and San people want constitutional acknowledgement and the right to autonomy and self-determination, White explains.

The Khoi and San are not recognised constitutionally. These are the challenges.

We are not free people in our own country of origin. We face human rights violations on a daily basis.
