Methodist Church to investigate reverend's demeaning comments about women

President of the South African Methodist Church, Bishop Ziphozihle Siwa says comments made by Reverend Vukile Mehana in a private conversation are unfortunate and that the Church distances itself from his utterances.

The conversation between Mehana and a Raymond Sibanga in which the reverend allegedly degraded women, was recorded by Sibanga and later posted on social media.

Bishop Siwa says the matter is being investigated and proper procedures will be followed.

We distance the church from those views, that's not our policy and that's not how we deal with things

Those remarks, even when made in a joking manner, they are indicative of how deep patriarchy is in society.

The Methodist Church has since released a statement in which it notes with dismay what it calls the blatant disrespect and portrayal of women who are characterised in a dismissive, humiliating and degrading manner.

The South African Council of Churches has also commented on the controversy. General Secretary, Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana says it is happy that the Methodist Church has distanced itself from the 'disgusting' statements made by Reverend Mehana.

This is a human rights issue, it is a gender issue and a constitutional issue...
