[LISTEN] Cape Town man stuck on Thai holiday island as tropical storm closes in

Capetonian Steve Binos is among hundreds of tourists stranded on an island in Thailand as Tropical Storm Pabuk barrels towards them.

Steve and his family were unable to leave Koh Tao after the ferry service - the only way off the island - was suspended.

It's reported that close to 50,000 tourists made it off Koh Tao and other islands before the storm hit, but others have been forced to ride it out.

Many holidaymakers from across the globe are stuck after flights were also cancelled.

The CapeTalk listener says while there have been heavy rains, the storm has not been as severe as some media reports have described.

He's hoping the ferry service will resume on Sunday or Monday.

It's been raining heavily here all day, with pretty strong winds. The storm is due to hit us the hardest at about midnight tonight. We'll hang on and see what that looks like.

Steve Binos, CapeTalk listener

Reading the news articles on the storm hasn't squared with what we're experiencing so far.

Steve Binos, CapeTalk listener

It hasn't escalated to a typhoon.... It's not anything to be concerned about yet.
