Doctor Shakira Choonara is a young leader, researcher and activist at the forefront of public health. She is an award winning health researcher and the 2017 Woman of the Year in Health in South Africa. She is this week's 702's Game Changer. Ray White on the Weekend Breakfast caught up with her.
Through her previous work, in her capacity as the adolescent Healthcare Manager at the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Africa Trust (SRHR Africa Trust), Dr Choonara successfully led and developed youth leadership and advocacy programmes including training in Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights.
Dr Choonara has made a significant contribution to meaningful youth engagement and amplifying young voices in the health and development sphere.
I want to become a responsive leader which is really missing in the African Continent. I want young people to be able to reach out to me, I want to meet people who are at school, I want to meet young professionals. I want to bring networks together, I also want to bring people who are in climate change, environment, healthcare - I want to bring young people together. I want to empower young people to understand the AU policies, its not the African Union that young people should to hold account - it is the members state that adopt what the African Union Puts out.— Dr Shakira Choonara - Researcher and Activist
