SANParks explains Lion's Head closure

Capetonians are not happy with SANParks decision to close Lion's Head for renovation.

They have questioned why Lion's Head is being closed during the height of tourist season in Cape Town.

Senior Section Ranger at SANParks Jaclyn Smith says while it understands the frustrations this has caused, ther was no other time to carry out the necessary renovations.

She says the plan is to rehabilitate the spiral trail as well as install new climbing infrastructure on the steep portions of the trail.

In addition, Smith says it plans to create 'a two-way system', meaning there will be a separate train going up and another going down to ease the congestion.

We had to look at a number of factors when looking at the timing to do this.

The kind of work we will be doing is not the kind of work we can do during winter time.

There's going to be a lot of drilling and a lot of setting and drying that need to take place and we can't have the interruptions of rain during the winter period.

Lion's Head will be closed for the next five weeks, says Smith.
