DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says principals and teachers are back at schools from Monday ahead of the first day, on Wednesday.

Approximately 17 000 children across Gauteng still need placement as school gates prepare to reopen across South Africa this week.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says its district offices are ready to help even more pupils and parents who are expected show up on the first day of term.

We are going to work very hard to make sure that we allocate spaces to all the children who don't have placement yet.

Elijah Mhlanga, Spokesperson at Department of Basic Education

DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says principals and teachers are back at schools from Monday in preparation for the start of the school year on Wednesday.

Mhlanga adds that the provisions for textbooks and stationery have been made for the learners who enrolled early on, while the department is dealing with accommodating late applications.

Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal are the provinces dealing with the biggest demand for school placement.

He says the department hopes to resolve late enrollment within 10 days after schools open this week.
