Political analyst Gareth van Onselen explains that the DA should be concerned that it could lose more support at the ballot box.

The latest figures in the new opinion poll by research company Ipsos suggest that the ANC will dominate this year’s general elections as the party regains lost supporters.

Of the 3 571 adults interviewed, 61% of said they would cast their vote in favour of the ANC in May.

14% said they would vote for the DA and 9% said they would vote for the EFF.

In addition, 6% said they would not vote in the elections or that they were not yet decided on who they would vote for in May, while 5% of the respondents did not answer.

Political commentator and columnist Gareth van Onselen says people should not fixate on the numbers mentioned in the poll, but rather the trends which it suggests.

Van Onselen explains that the DA should be concerned that it could lose more support at the ballot box.

The DA's problem is that a lot its voters are, at the moment, alienated from the party and unsure or will not vote.

Trends are one of the key indicators in the poll... which way the parties are headed.

ANC seems to have increased slightly from in the last Ipsos poll.

It doesn't matter which way you look at, the DA is struggling to break that 22% it got in 2014.
