Sibanye says the mines are operating but not at full capacity as the wage strike continues from last year.

Head of Investor relations for Sibanye-Stillwater, James Wellstead says the mines are operating, though not at full capacity, amidst the wage strike.

Wellstead says the other three unions representing its workforce have signed a wage agreement in October which the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (Amcu) bluntly refused to do.

Amcu represents about 43% of the workforce at Sibanye. This has led to violence between rival trade unions.

The other employees who belong to other three unions have been reporting for work and where we can we have got strike plans, putting people to try and optimise production and minimise costs as much as possible so that we can survive through the strike.

James Wellstead, Head of Investor relations for Sibanye-Stillwater

Wellstead says they have started a process of verification with CCMA which will allow them to extend an offer to Amcu members.

The verification exercise will be possible if the other three unions have 50 plus members, which is currently happening, as some members are leaving Amcu.
