The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Thursday held a press briefing to discuss its readiness for the upcoming elections. The commission says it is ready and on track for the national and Local elections.
Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo says though the election day has not been confirmed, President Cyril Ramaphosa has made a pronouncement that the election will be in May.
On the 26 and 27 of January, we want to give every South African the ability to first confirm their addresses on the voters' roll- and for those South Africans who have never enlisted as voters before to take advantage of the opportunity to enlist because we expect that soon thereafter the elections will be proclaimed.— Sy Mamabolo, Chief Electoral Officer
The legal impact of the proclamation date is that the voters' roll will be closed meaning no further person can be enlisted on the roll.
Once you are on the roll, you decide on whomever you wish to vote for.— Sy Mamabolo, Chief Electoral Officer
He adds that there are a number of ways to confirm one's registration which includes the website election.org.co.za. There is also an SMS facility where people can send their ID numbers to 32810 to receive confirmation of their registration.
We also have a contact centre on 0800 11 8000 and there will be a call centre consultant who will assist you.— Sy Mamabolo, Chief Electoral Officer
