[LISTEN] Masterclass on DNA ancestry-testing
Are you interested in finding out more about your biological heritage?
Would you undergo a DNA test to learn exactly where you're from?
Executive Officer at the Academy of Science of South Africa Prof Himla Soodyall, has lead research into the people of sub-Saharan Africa using DNA testing.
Her studies have identified some of the oldest DNA found in people today.
Soodyall explains how all humans are 99% alike.
Irrespective of how we look, genetically, if we were to mix the DNA of any two individuals, more than 99% of that DNA would be identical.Prof Himla Soodyall, Academy of Science of South Africa
Basically, less than one percent of that difference accounts for all the variation we see in terms of morphology - whether we are short, tall, have blue eyes or black eyes, etc. This is the power that DNA has. We are all part of the same tree of life.Prof Himla Soodyall, Academy of Science of South Africa
