Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development

This month, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will be carrying out free vaccinations for domestic pets.

The Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in connection with the Gauteng Veterinary Services will be kicking off their free vaccination and booster vaccination campaign, this month. Through this campaign, the department will ensure that there is a high degree of immunity against rabies among the pet population.

702’s Joanne Josephs sits down with Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Chief Director for Veterinary Services, Dr. Dietana Nemudzivhadi to talk about this important initiative – and although Gauteng has the disease under control, surrounding areas do not. For this reason, the department would like to clamp down on the problem by equipping the public with adequate knowledge around rabies.

The biggest challenge is that you have human cases and, that brings a level of seriousness to a whole new level altogether because, once you have human cases, it shows you that you have a highly naive or non-immune dog population because it's usually transmitted by dogs.

Dr. Dietana Nemudzivhadi, Chief Director for Veterinary Services

In their ongoing efforts to address the problem, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development have conducted various rabies vaccination campaigns in townships, informal settlements and on farms.

In order to control rabies in the pet population, you've got to try and vaccinate about 70% of the dog population but as far as we're concerned our coverage would seem to be wide enough to prevent spillage into the human population. So, vaccination campaigns are scheduled throughout the year...

Dr. Dietana Nemudzivhadi, Chief Director for Veterinary Services
