DWS: Use water sparingly as dam levels continue to drop

The Department of Water and Sanitation says high temperatures have caused water levels in the Integrated Vaal River System to fall.

The Department of Water and Sanitation has warned Gauteng residents to use water sparingly as water levels across the 14 dams forming part of the Integrated Vaal River System (IVRS) continue to drop.

Spokesperson for DWS, Sputnik Ratau says the average dam level is at 77.5%, compared to 82.4% at the same time in 2018.

He attributes the drop to the high temperatures in Gauteng, as well as the delay in summer rains.

Summer rains in the inland provinces have actually been delayed a lot because between September and December we haven't had that much rainfall.

Sputnik Ratau, spokesperson for Department of Water and Sanitation

We have had sporadic showers here and there, but obviously it is important that our catchment area are the ones that must experience most of the rainfall so that we can see a recharge of our water resources.

Sputnik Ratau, spokesperson for Department of Water and Sanitation

Ratau says the department is also concerned about the Karoo area in the Western Cape, particularly the Beaufort West and Laingsburg municipalities.

We have had engagements as the department with those municipalities as well as with province to look at what the status is.

Sputnik Ratau, spokesperson for Department of Water and Sanitation

The Gamka Dam is completely empty and the reservoirs are at different levels and that implies that the bulk water supply is under stress...but not at a crisis level.

Sputnik Ratau, spokesperson for Department of Water and Sanitation

At the moment we are calling on people to use water sparingly. We must remember that South Africa remains a water-scarce country even when you are having the best of rainfall.

Sputnik Ratau, spokesperson for Department of Water and Sanitation

Ratau says there are other factors that affect the water supply like ageing infrastructure, water theft by people bypassing water meters and pipe bursts resulting from water shedding
