Along with City Power and Rand Water officials, Mayor Herman Mashaba on Wednesday cracked down on businesses suspected of illegally connecting their electricity and water.

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa, Mashaba explains that when he took over as mayor he did an exercise to ascertain the extent of water and electricity losses.

Our water losses are running up to 37% and this was totally abnormal and the extent of the losses was just too massive. I then launched Buya Mthetho.

Mashaba says he was saddened to find that the first three properties they visited had illegally connected water and electricity.

It really breaks one, because it is not people in the townships, it's people building huge developments and now we are forced to stop their constructions and that has a huge impact on the economy.
