Police Commissioner Bheki Cele says the police authorities have agreed to withdraw an application for leave to appeal an Equality Court judgment which found the allocation of policing in the Western Cape discriminated against poor black people.
Cele says they have come to a conclusion that agrees with the court judgement that black people are indeed discriminated against not only in the Western Cape but across the country.
We concur with the outcome put by the judge that there is a skewed way of resource allocation in African areas not just in the Western Cape - Western Cape might be worse, but we talking nationally.— Bheki Cele, Minister of Police
Now ours is to correct that situation so the national commissioner and the minister have agreed that the appeal should be withdrawn.— Bheki Cele, Minister of Police
Cele says the decision was reached after thorough engagement with the police senior management which proved that Equality Court ruling was actually correct.
