2019 SA Giving report reveals how youth are leading in terms of volunteering

The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in Southern Africa has released their Giving report which indicates 88% of South Africans have done some charitable work - such as giving money to a non-profit organisation (NPO), volunteering at their local church or sponsoring someone in the last 12 months.

Around eight in ten (79%) did something charitable within the last four weeks.

CEO of CAF Southern Africa Gill Bates joined Azania Mosaka on her show, to talk about the importance of the report.

This report is important in that it shows us trends, how we give, our preferences, habits and behaviors. That helps us understand giving in a global context and then we can use this research to help our funders make informed decisions about where they send their money to.

Gill Bates, CEO of Charities Aid Foundation Southern Africa

Essentially this report really measures generosity behaviors and there are many of them but the three that we look at are first of all giving money to a non-profit organisation, volunteering time and helping a stranger.

She says the report shows how 18-24 year old's are leading in the volunteering space.

Young people in our country are really defining agendas, they are really passionate about their causes. Young people may not have disposable income but they are certainly way above the rest of us in terms of volunteering.
