It's estimated that about 100 000 parents opt to home school their children.
That's according to trustee of the Pestalozzi Trust Shaun Green who says while exact figures are not available the number has grown considerably since 2011.
Green says there are many reasons for the uptake and that it may be attributed to the changing landscape in education.
The entire education landscape has been evolving, moving away from a industriliased one size fits all approach towards a more flexible, customised solution and home schooling is one of the approaches that fits that very well.— Shaun Green, Trustee - The Pestalozzi Trust
Green says there are many accreditation systems available to home schoolers both locally and internationally.
This does offer a form of quality control. For those who would like to see their children excelling at tertiary studies, they would for instance be able to sit exams both locally and internationally. Internationally we find more people opting for Cambridge exams and an American GED certificate. More and more options are becoming available.— Shaun Green, Trustee - The Pestalozzi Trust
We engage with the department and provincial departments at every opportunity and have been in workshops with them. When we hear of changes being proposed we engage with them directly.— Shaun Green, Trustee - The Pestalozzi Trust
