State Capture Inquiry

'Bosasa might have milked R12 billion from the state, the amount could be more'

According to The Mail and Guardian, R12 Billion is the amount that Bosasa has collected in a form of 1000 payments made by the South African government.

South Africans have been hearing testimonies from different former Bosasa employees at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture about how the company milked the state with alleged dodgy and bogus contracts.

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa, the head of the Mail and Guardian data desk, Athandiwe Saba says even though it is easy for people to focus on the prominent names grabbing the headlines, the real scandal is in the various contracts that Bosasa was awarded by the state.

What was the actual cost to the state? So the Mail and Guardian went through the numbers and we went through the contracts that Bosasa received in the past five years and looked at the payments and invoices they put into different government departments.

Athandiwe Saba, Head of data desk - Mail and Guardian

The smallest number that we have come up with apparently is R12 billion but we understand from our research that we have been conducting, this amount is only part of those invoices.

Athandiwe Saba, Head of data desk - Mail and Guardian

We don't know how much more Bosasa might have received as some of those invoices might not be in the system yet.
