CT City and Safa at loggerheads over Athlone Stadium occupancy

The City of Cape Town has asked South African Football Association (Safa) to vacate its offices at Athlone Stadium but the footballing body is refusing to do so.

The City is citing safety concerns and the fact that the stadium is not zoned for business as its reasons for wanting Safa to move out.

The two have been on loggerheads over this issue.

Mayco Member for Economic Opportunities and Assets Management, James Vos says it is important that the City gets the facility's zoning correct as well as comply with the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act.

If these issues are not dealt with, the stadium can lose its grading and that puts all the users at risk, including soccer.

I think it disingenuous for some individuals to claim that moving Safa from Athlone stadium places soccer at a disadvantage

The Safa Cape Town located at Athlone Stadium performs purely administrative duties which can easily be performed at any other location within Cape Town.

Vos says the City has offered Safa an alternative location in which they can continue performing their administrative functions.

He says the audits have identified a number of the City's facilities as not being Sasrea compliant.

This is an absolute necessity and I really hope we can solve this matter and move on.
