Business and Arts South Africa NPC (BASA) once again hosted the Conduct the Orchestra event the 2019 Johannesburg International Mozart Festival (JIMF) on Friday.

The charitable event took place at the Space Frame Theatre, Linder Auditorium Complex.

702's very own Azania Mosaka and senior managers from various local businesses joined renowned conductor Richard Cock for a unique experience where they got to test their conducting skills on the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra.

For the first time I had to go into a space where I had no idea what this was about, I got some coaching from Richard which was helpful but you don't know what to expect until you stand on that stage.

Michelle Green-Thomas of SA Airlink chose a particularly challenging piece of music when she conducted the orchestra through 'Ride of the Valkyries'.

I remember when I first chose it an Richard said this is a very ambitious piece. When I was in front of the audience I was definitely very nervous, just being assisted and supported, having everyone who was working with me help me essentially finish....

Michelle Green-Thomson, Strategic Market Customer Relations Officer – Government, SA Airlink

Sharing some tips on conducting, Cock says the orchestra needs to trust the conductor to give them clear instructions and get on with their job.

Sometimes you hand power over to the orchestra, sometimes you have more power in your control as the conductor. It is a two way street. It is actually a very interesting power relationship with the players.

Richard Cock, conductor/composer
