Search for Good Samaritan who helped CT cyclist hit by alleged drunk driver

A Cape Town cyclist remains in ICU and has a long road to recovery after being hit by a suspected drunk driver early on Saturday morning.

Abdullah Jaffer was riding with a group of friends as part of his training for the Cape Epic.

He had pulled ahead of the group and stopped to wait for them when he reached the top of Suikerbossie in Hout Bay.

That's when a 26-year-old motorist, apparently under the influence of alcohol, rammed into Jaffer, who is the owner of a well-known Cape pharmacy.

Jaffer suffered severe injuries, including multiple fractures and facial injuries.

Meanwhile, the cycling community, the Pedal Power Association (PPA), has urged motorists to have respect for all road users, including cyclists.

CEO of the PPA, Robert Vogel, was on the scene and says the alleged drunk driver's eyes were bloodshot and his speech incoherent.

Vogel has slammed police for their apparent inefficiency and failure to be forthcoming with case details.

The driver appeared in court on Monday, but it seems he did not spend the weekend in jail as previously reported.

He has been charged with negligent and reckless driving. The man is out on bail and his next court appearance is set for 11 June.

He [Jaffer] was lying in the middle of the road on the left lane, heading to Hout Bay... The car was sitting in the tree, facing the road at a 90-degree angle.

The driver was uninjured, with not a scratch on him. He was totally fine.

The victim's wife says the family wishes to thank Dr Kate Richardson, Dr Bryant Roux and a third unidentified woman who provided medical assistance on the scene.

She's asked for Capetonians to email pippah@capetalk.co.za with any information regarding the unknown woman who helped save her husband's life.
