Parliament to subpoena security company involved in fatal DUT shooting

Two security guards have been taken in for questioning following the death of 21-year-old Mlungisi Madonsela.

Madonsela was shot dead, allegedly by private security on campus.

A private security guard apparently opened fire during a scuffle with students on Tuesday. The students were angry at the exclusion of those with historic debt from registration as well as a lack of accommodation.

Eyewitness News reporter Ziyanda Ngcobo attended a series of media briefings by the institution's management as well as the university's SRC on Wednesday.

We have just come out of a briefing from the Durban University's management and the vice chancellor there has corroborated and confirmed the version of events as given by the SRC. He says in fact two security guards have since been taken in for questioning by police.

The university has condemned the use of live ammunition on campus but there are several questions around why the security guards were using live ammunition to begin with.

Students say they will continue with demonstrations.

Ngcobo says parliament is set to subpoena the private security company in question.

Parliament will be subpoenaing the security company involved in the incident. We now know the name of the security company is Excellence Security Company and essentially they [parliament] are going to be seeking answers as to why live ammunition was being used as a means to disperse the crowd yesterday.
