State Capture Inquiry

Bosasa arrests just the beginning, says Adriaan Basson

New24 editor Adriaan Basson says heads are finally starting to roll in connection with corruption at Bosasa, and it's only the beginning.

On Wednesday seven people were charged with corruption, money laundering and fraud related to dodgy Bosasa deals. Five of them have been since granted R20,000 bail each.

Former Bosasa executive and whistleblower Angelo Agrizzi is among the accused after his recent testimony at the state capture commission of inquiry.

Basson, who was intimidated for reporting on Bosasa corruption over many years, says it has taken 10 years for criminal action to be taken.

This week's arrests are apparently linked to the misappropriation of R1.6 billion in tenders awarded to Bosasa by the Correctional Services Department.

Basson says the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) had reported on this corruption back in 2009, but nothing was done by the NPA or the Correctional Services minister at the time.

He says he Bosasa case is the perfect opportunity for newly-appointed NPA boss Shamila Batohi to renew confidence in her office.

Basson adds that the public must continue to put pressure on the authorities to brink corrupt officials to book.

The arrests are really just the beginning. This is the tip of the iceberg.

This is the beginning, it's just a few tenders in the Correctional Services Department.

The SIU handed the report to then Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the NPA, 10 years ago exactly. That was the docket that today finally made it to court.

This is a case involving tenders cooking food at prisons, CCTV installation, fencing and very expensive, large TV sets in prisons.

It's a long way to go. From all the revelations at the Zondo Commission, there must be many more Bosasa trials.

Basson says there's a possibility that state prosecutors could negotiate a deal or lesser charge for the likes of Agrizzi.
