Open interview sessions to appoint Sars commissioner a first in SA history

Former finance minister Trevor Manuel will be leading a high-level panel to interview and recommend candidates for the position of South African Revenue Service (Sars) commissioner.

Manuel was appointed by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni to replace former Commissioner Tom Moyane who was fired by President Cyril Ramaphosa in September.

Deputy editor at Financial Mail, Sikonathi Mantshantsha gives an overview of finance news that made headlines in this week.

He says the move to appoint Trevor Manuel as the chair of this panel is a welcome move as it will usher in transparency.

It can only be a welcome move and the best part of this is that it will be done transparently just like the appointment of the National Director of Public Prosecution.

Sikonathi Mantshantsha, Deputy editor - Financial Mail

For the first time in the history of South Africa, there will be an open interview session where you and I will get to know how these key and strategic positions are filled, instead of Thabo Mbeki just waking up one morning and appointing Pravin Gordhan just because he his a comrade - which turned out to be a great appointment. Then we had Tom Moyane which turned out to be a complete disaster.
