The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to the Lex Mpati Commission of Inquiry regarding allegations of impropriety by Sekunjalo Chairman Iqbal Surve related to the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).
DA MP Alf Lees says Surve should be subpoenaed to appear before the commission in light of the allegations implicating Surve in misusing funds received from PIC.
According to the testimonies, Surve received R4.3 billion in investment from PIC under false pretences.
These accusations can't just be left hanging in the air and we think the only way to get to the bottom of this is through the commission which Justice Lex Mpati is chairing and for Surve to go along and declare his innocence.— Alf Lees, Member of Parliament - DA
Lees denies the party is trying to dictate to the commission how it should be run.
This is an independent commission and we are no way trying to direct what the commission should do. we are simply expressing our views and we will standby whatever the commission decides.— Alf Lees, Member of Parliament - DA
He says it is clear now that the PIC did not follow due processes in funding Surve, therefore, it should do everything in its power to recover the money "before it's all lost".
Surve has responded through the Independent Newspaper, which he owns, trying to explain how it came about that he receive the funding from PIC and that it wasn't under false pretences.
Lees says the matter is now in the public domain and if Surve wants to clear his name he should appear before the commission and tell his side of the story instead of using his own newspaper as his mouthpiece.
