Vytjie Mentor's testimony on meeting Atul Gupta doesn't add up, commission finds

Commission of Inquiry into State Capture
Despite contradictory evidence presented at the state capture inquiry, Mentor has stuck to her guns on meeting Atul Gupta in China.

The state capture commission has presented its own evidence after putting the testimony of former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor to the test.

On Monday, the commission revealed that its own investigation contradicts Mentor's testimony in relation to her official visit to China in 2010.

Mentor testified last year that she met Gupta brother, Atul, in Beijing, reports EWN's Clement Manyathela.

She also told the commission that former President Jacob Zuma’s son, Duduzane, introduced her to two other Gupta brothers and another businessman on that flight to China.

However, evidence leaders contacted the Home Affairs Department and found that their records prove that Atul Gupta was in South Africa at the time.

Furthermore, the Department of Trade and Industry provided documents to the commission proving that Atul was not part of the delegation.

Despite the contradictory evidence presented at the state capture inquiry, Mentor has stuck to her guns.

Vytjie Mentor seems to insist that, even though the records contradict her testimony, Atul Gupta was there.

She indicated that on that flight she met Jacob Zuma's son, Duduzane, who then introduced her to the Gupta brothers.

But during her testimony last year she also did say that Atul Gupta was already in China at the time and that she saw him when she arrived.

The record's show that Atul Gupta was actually in the country (South Africa) and never left. This was after they looked at all his passports.

The commission has also been dealing with several other discrepancies in her testimony ahead of her cross-examination on Tuesday.
