Bushiri's SA home investigated to ensure it's in line with Immigration Act

The Department of Home Affairs is investigating the self-acclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s South African home.

This comes after Bushiri and wife Mary were arrested and charged with fraud and money laundering then released on R100 000 bail.

Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza says the investigation is part of assisting the law enforcement agency in crime prevention.

He says although he can't divulge much on the case, the department was approached to ascertain Bushiri's residency in the country to ensure that proper procedures were followed.

He confirms that Bushiri currently holds permanent residency status which allows him to take part in economic and social activities in South Africa.

The Department is working as part of the Justice and Crime Prevention Cluster. We are normally called upon to verify information to support the work of the law enforcement agency.

Siya Qoza, Spokesperson - Home Affairs

As we speak, Bushiri has permanent residency and when you have permanent residency you enjoy the benefits similar to those enjoyed by citizens except that you don't have the right vote.

Siya Qoza, Spokesperson - Home Affairs

The investigation is just to ensure that his residency is in line with the Immigration Act because when you apply for the permit there are certain requirements that you must meet and you also need to deliver certain obligations so we just need to make sure that is still the case.
