Cosatu: Slight unemployment drop 'not enough', concerns about Eskom unbundling

The unemployment rate has decreased slightly to 27.1% in the fourth quarter.

This is according to StatsSA which states that 6.1 million people are now without jobs, down from 6.2 million in the third quarter.

Xolani Gwala talks to the second deputy president of Cosatu, Zingiswa Losi about the latest statistics.

We must appreciate the drop from 28 to 27 but it is not enough.

Zingiswa Losi, Second deputy president - Cosatu

She says this is little progress and with the threat of the unbundling of Eskom, more jobs are on the line.

We need to find lasting solutions....as the economy grows we must create employment.

Zingiswa Losi, Second deputy president - Cosatu

If you unbundle Eskom and introduce an independent power producer, it has already been said that coal stations will be closed....and there will be job losses.

Zingiswa Losi, Second deputy president - Cosatu

Who are these independent power producers, she asks, and surely it will lead to privatisation.

How many jobs will be created by independent power producers?

Zingiswa Losi, Second deputy president - Cosatu
