Suicide is the highest between the ages of 15 and 29, says Sadag

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) believes one of the ways to curb suicide, especially among teenagers, is education.

Sadag has turned its attention to young people as it marks teen suicide awareness week.

Sadag's Charity Mkone says it's important to raise awareness about suicide and how to help young people battling mental illness and suicidal ideation.

She explains that suicide is the highest between the ages of 15 and 29.

There are 460 completed and attempted suicides per day in South Africa.

Mkone warns that the silence and language around suicide can isolate young people becomes a barrier to preventing them from opening up.

Sadag advises that there is treatment and help available for teens who feel hopeless and who have suicidal thoughts.

If you or a loved one needs help, you can call the Suicide Crisis Line on 0800 567 567 or the Sadag Mental Health Line on 011 234 4837 to speak to a trained counsellor who can assist you further.
