City of Joburg agrees is not meeting its recycling target

The City of Joburg has responded to concerns that recycling in some areas is not being carried out.

MMC for environment and infrastructure service, Nico de Jager says there have been some challenges with regards to recycling in the city for the past two months.

When we started with recycling in Joburg we made it very clear that this is a pilot in 234 areas in the city and it was not piloted across the whole city.

Though we called it mandatory - maybe mandatory was not the right word - because there were no punitive measures in place.

Residents are required to separate their refuse and put recyclable materials in a different bag ready for collection -but a listener says the truck refused to collect it.

De Jager says the recycling bags are collected by a different truck and not the normal Pikitup truck.

We have sufficient allocation fleet to deal with the separation of chores.

The clear bags get collected by a different truck which comes afterward to collect the recyclables.

He acknowledges that the City hasn't met its recycling target because of some of these challenges they are facing.

Ideally, we should be around 80% of our target and we are not yet there. We are around 50% of our target, which is way below but it leads to the right direction.
