Government putting up millions for Caster Semenya's defence in IAAF battle

The Sowetan is reporting that government is going to spend an estimated R25-million in its court battle with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)‚ to defend 800-meter world and Olympic champion Caster Semenya.

The 5-day hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport will start in Switzerland on Monday.

The hearing will challenge the IAAF’s proposed rule aimed at restricting testosterone levels in female runners.

Eyewitness News reporter Ayanda Nyathi was at a briefing held by the Sports and Recreation Ministry on Friday.

Sports and Recreation Minister Thokozile Xasa absolutely held no stops this afternoon. She slammed the regulations as racist and sexist. She suggests they were created specifically for Caster Semenya, to target her.

As far as she is concerned there isn't much fairness behind these proposed rules and has therefore called on civil society, South Africans and her own ministry to back their overhaul.

Nyathi reports that the Director General says they are cautiously optimistic about the investment in the case.

His response was that they are cautiously optimistic that it is going to go through and that the quote was -' we cannot cannot afford to lose it'. I suggest that this is because this will set a precedent moving forward.

Ayanda Nyathi, EWN reporter

As far as Xasa is concerned the country has an invested interest in ensuring that this is seen through.
