The hit show from the Mother City, Aunty Merle - The Musical, finally comes to Joburg Theatre and is currently playing until the 03 March 2019.
Written by stand-up comedian, Marc Lottering, and directed by Lara Foot, the play has received no fewer than four Fleur Du Cap theatre nominations.
It enjoyed two sell-out seasons last year and will be back in Cape Town for a third season, by public demand.
Speaking to Phemelo on Weekend Breakfast, Mark Lottering said, when you stand-up as a comedian, talk about things you are confident about because the audience responds to honesty.
After observing my mother and my friends all the time, the Aunty Marle character was born. I could not get rid of this character, so every time I would get on stage, people would ask for Aunty Merle. So when I started writing this musical, I thought which character stands out and it was Aunty Merle because she is so endearing and South Africans love her.— Mark Lottering, Stand-up comedian
The show is a drama that unfolds in Athlone. Merle’s daughter, Abigail, announces her engagement to Alan, who is a white man. But Abigail’s corrupt ex, Denver Paulse is determined to get her back and, if not, threatens to reveal a very dark secret which is bound to tear the two love birds apart.
