There could be dire consequences if members heed Amcu's strike call - analyst

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has called for strike action in the platinum and coal sectors on Tuesday.

The strike action has been called after an announcement by Sibanye-Stillwater last week to shed at least 6000 jobs as part of its restructuring plan.

Contributor at Mining MX Ed Stoddard says if Amcu members heeding the call and embark on a strike against the backdrop of load shedding and all the other challenges facing the South African economy, could lead to dire consequences.

There may be a smaller number of job losses, he adds.

Sibanye has said that it could be up to 6000 and it was flagged to unions in the past weeks. They do say that it is not set in stone and they might find ways to litigate it.
