Reports that Eskom has put the army and police on standby are disturbing - Numsa

The Mail and Guardian is reporting that Eskom's management has been meeting with the The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure to avert acts of sabotage at the utility.

The media house says there are fears of pushback by labour over possible retrenchments.

National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi says the union is disturbed by the reports and believes this is based on assumption.

Assuming what they are reporting is true, it does seem that this is based on an assumption that workers are going to embark on some kind of sabotage or acts of violence in response to the fact that retrenchments are on the cards at Eskom.

Phakamile Hlubi, spokesperson - Numsa

We find it extremely disturbing if it is true that this is how Eskom's management feel and this is their attitude, particularity because there is absolutely no evidence to back up such an assertion.

The Xolani Gwala Show was unable to reach Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe for comment.

While the utility and President Cyril Ramaphosa have assured unions that there will be no job cuts, Hlubi says it refuses to believe that.

We can't believe them because they made it very clear that retrenchments are on the cards when they made the decision to unbundle Eskom - and unbundling is privatisation.

READ: 'Eskom wont be privatised, but strategic private players will be brought in'

We know what they are doing now is to try and pacify workers, so they are going to lie and say retrenchments are not coming.
