Scientific paper may work in Caster Semenya's favour

A paper conducted by a team of scientists could potentially be used to prove that higher testosterone levels don’t provide an advantage in sporting races of more than 400m.

Leading genetic testing company Prenetics International says the paper could vindicate South African athlete Caster Semenya in her ongoing battle with the International Association of Athletics Federation.

However, the firm's CEO says there have been difficulties in publishing the research.

Typically in the scientific community you go through what is called a peer review process and we had a very difficult time getting this peer reviewed until we employed some world leading scientists to advocate on our behalf.

Avi Lasarow, CEO - Prenetics International

In the case of Caster, the same scientists came to me and said we have got this paper that actually demonstrates quite clearly according to the data, that female middle distance athletes don't have an advantage with increased testosterone. They were having difficulty publishing that paper.

Avi Lasarow, CEO - Prenetics International

I am not saying that there is anything underhand going on at all, all I am saying is that sometimes when a case of this magnitude is in the public domain, then a scientific paper could indeed make such an impact...
