Portfolio committee is responsible for McBride's contract not Minister Cele - DA

Negotiations came to a standstill when the Portfolio Committee on Police, looking at the renewal of Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) head Robert McBride’s contract, met on Monday.

The African National Congress (ANC) MPs supported Police Minister Bheki Cele position not to renew McBride's contract while opposition MPs argued for him to remain.

McBride's contract is expected to end on Thursday.

Does the police minister have the right to hire and fire whoever he deems fit? By refusing to renew McBride's contract, Cele may be undermining the independence of Ipid, argue politicians like Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Dianne Kohler-Barnard.

She says McBride refuted various allegations against him and shared reasons why he believes his contract should be extended.

That extension is very clearly laid out in the legislation and this portfolio committee may take the decision to extend or not extend his contract. He didn't demand anything. What shook everyone was when the minister sent out a letter to McBride saying he, Cele has decided that he is not going to have his contract extended.

Then he wrote to the Speaker saying the same thing and he has absolutely no right to do that.
