Scroll down to listen to Bruce Whitfield's interview of Chris Botha.

Botha cut his teeth at the University of the Free State where he presented a campus radio sports show.

University of the Free State

I studied Communications at university and absolutely loved it! I enjoyed sports journalism so much as a student; I would’ve paid to do it. Sports are, even today, my absolute passion!

Chris Botha, The MediaShop MD

The University of the Free State is now in a hundred times better condition - the physical structures, intellectually, every single factor - than it was when I was there about 20 years ago.

Chris Botha, The MediaShop MD

Chris Botha describes his wife, Julie, and the Free State Cheetahs as “the two loves in my life”.

The MediaShop is the best media agency in South Africa, according to Research Company Evaluating the Media Agency Industry.

Chris Botha was listed as one of the Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans in 2013.

My dad told me there’s no way I’m going to make money as a journalist. He bought The Sunday Times and Rapport and showed me there wasn’t a single job opening for a journalist. There was, however, a job posting for an ‘Ad sales executive’ that paid R20 000 per month; an incredible amount of money, I thought. So, I thank my dad for the eventual career path I chose.

Chris Botha, The MediaShop MD

Ad sales people need hair on their teeth. You’re basically representing a product you have little control over.

Chris Botha, The MediaShop MD

The MediaShop buys a lot of media research and we also do a lot of research of our own.

Chris Botha, The MediaShop MD

Once you’ve reached the top level it’s your responsibility to send the lift back down again.

Digital has changed everything in advertising!
