MPs divided over renewal of McBride's contract

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police appears to be divided over the renewal of Robert McBride’s contract as executive director of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

McBride’s contract is due to end on Thursday but he wants the committee to give him an oral hearing after Police Minister Bheki Cele’s decision not to renew his term.

Eyewitness News parliamentary correspondent Babalo Ndenze says the African National Congress (ANC) seems unanimous in not wanting his contract to be renewed.

They are making reference to previous investigations and reports by the public service commission and it involves how he treated a certain subordinate and violated his authority and went beyond his powers in changing the performance areas of one of his subordinates.

The Democratic Alliance has made it clear that it wants McBride to stay.

The other opposing view is mainly the DA, who are basically saying these are allegations and McBride could take them up on review. They are saying that Robert McBride has shown the right moves in as far as tackling police corruption which seems to have gone out of hand.
